1949 VAP3 in Original Running Order with Rare Accessories
48cc ABG Type M1

I found this interesting VAP3 in Paris; it had been in storage for over 30 years.

It has some wonderful – and very rare – period accessories. Above, you can see the rear pannier, which is designed to fit on the opposite side of the rear rack to the petrol tank; its design compliments the petrol tank.
In the top photo you can see the front mudguard ‘weather shield’ fitting.
But the most fabulous accessory can be seen below…

Yes, this VAP3 has been fitted with rear ‘trafficator’ illuminating indicators!

Look at the indicator switch mechanism, above.

A speedometer, above, and dynamo and lighting set, below, are always very welcome on a vintage machine. Though by comparison with that amazing indicator set-up, they now appear somewhat mundane.

My friend Patrick has completely reconditioned this 60-year-old moteur auxiliaire. He fitted new tyres and a new-old-stock coil. It starts easily and runs well.

ABG VAP HISTORY
The company ABG (réunion des sociétés ARIES, La Bougie BG et de la SFEDR) was the largest postwar French manufacturer of auxiliary engines.
Hundreds of VAP Service Stations were set up throughout France in the fifties and sixties.
They could not compete with Motobecane and VéloSolex but, by the 1960s, with acquisitions of other companies, ABG had become the third largest manufacturer of mopeds in France.

The VAP3 was one of the first ‘moteur auxiliare’ models in full production in postwar France. The VAP was very popular as it was more powerful than its competitors such as Velosolex. Note that, unlike the VAP4, the VAP3 is not chain driven, and it has a magneto not a flywheel.
Although there is no clutch on this model, there is a lever to pull the engine up, and this works as well as a clutch.

2-Stroke engines – and cyclemotors in particular – are notoriously unreliable. Basic servicing is generally required if unused for even a few weeks.
