Pashley Pick-up Delivery Trike
Pashley Cycles is the longest established bicycle manufacturer in Great Britain. Based in Stratford-upon-Avon, the company has been making bicycles for over 80 years.
Pashley Cycles was formed by William ‘Rath’ Pashley in 1926. He’d ridden as a despatch rider in the First World War and gained engineering experience as an apprentice with Austin Motors.
Initially the small company called Pashley and Barber (his wife’s maiden name) manufactured all manner of bikes, but it was in carrier cycles that Pashley made their name.
The first premises were set up in Digbeth in Birmingham, but due to increasing demand larger premises were acquired in Aston. In 1936 the business, then known as Pashley Carrier Cycles, was incorporated as a limited company and became WR Pashley Ltd.
Originally almost every component was made in-house. Only the tubing and lugs were bought in. This allowed constant product development and a very high level of quality control.
After the depression, Pashley supplied the Wall’s ice cream Stop Me and Buy One tricycles, with two wheels at the front and one at the back. Other businesses began to take advantage of Pashley’s carrier cycles. Two-wheeled load carriers like the small front wheeled ‘Deli Bike’ became favourites with butchers, milkmen and vintners amongst others.
I’m not sure of the age of this Pashley Pick-up Delivery Trike. It was restored years ago at some expense, and is either a recent model that has had some early parts added to it, or an early model with modern retro parts.
…Because that’s the advantage of a Pashley – the company still manufactures the parts so it’s easy to keep your machine on the road.
And their Pashley Workbikes are still hand-built in the UK – they take around 6 weeks to build.
It looks very similar to the Pashley ‘Classic 33’ which retails for just under £1000, and is used for ice-cream sales. I’ve reproduced an advert for the Classic 33 so you can compare it.
Here’s some advertising blurb too…
22.5″ FRAME RED, 22.5″ FRAME BLACK, 22.5″ FRAME BLUE, 22.5″ FRAME GREEN, 22.5″ FRAME YELLOW, 22.5″ FRAME ORANGE
Remember that demand for our Classic 33 is always high during the summer months and to plan ahead when ordering your custom machine.

£979.99 – THIS PRICE IS FOR THE CYCLE ONLY, SEE FREEZER SECTION FOR DIFFERENT PRICES FOR DIFFERENT MODELS.
Mine does not have the rear carrier mentioned in the above blurb. Instead it has a 1940’s rear mudguard. The restorer has built and fitted a wooden front pick-up bed which gives it much more of a period appearance.
And it also has this superb pre-1938 Sturmey Archer top-mounted gear-change..
“The Sturmey Archer quadrant shifter (model GC1) was a precursor to the trigger shifter used from 1938 onwards. It was typically used for the Sturmey Archer K series hubs. It has 3 positions, Low, Normal and High.”
Front tyre size is 200 x 19.
It rides very well and would be ideal for any application, but seems particularly well-suited to business advertising use. If you like vintage vehicles and run a business, this is an ideal opportunity to combine both – and deduct the expenses from your tax bill.
On summer weekends, you could fit the kids or grandkids in the front and ride them around the parade ring at steam rallies or vintage shows.

2-Stroke engines – and cyclemotors in particular – are notoriously unreliable. Basic servicing is generally required if unused for even a few weeks.
