1936 Terrot MT 100cc 2-Speed Grand Luxe

ONE PREVIOUS OWNER FROM NEW!

Of the many emails and phonecalls I receive from customers as I sell these vehicles, a large percentage ask ‘How do you manage to part with these fabulous machines?” It is admittedly a problem. Along with most of my fellow enthusiasts, I concede that I am addicted to these wonderful beasts.

If I had unlimited funds and space, I’d not sell anything. I’m also conscious of the fact that we are only custodians of such historic machinery. But the main factor is that, by passing them on for others to enjoy and cherish, it gives me the resources to buy more!

This delightful little motorcycle is typical of the vehicles that I’m powerless to resist.

Not only is it a design classic, but it’s also a one-owner motorcycle in amazing condition for its age …and comes with its original bill-of-sale.

Monsieur Michel Morhaise purchased it from Camille Lerale, the Terrot concessionaires in Bourges, on 14th February, 1936.

THE BMA – 100cc Bicyclette Moteur Auxiliaire

Introduced in 1926, these are the rules for a BMA, which meant that no registration or license was required:

1. Less than 100cc

2. Under 30kg

3. Less than 30kph

4. Pedals fitted

In the 1930s, the BMA was all the rage: with these concessions, motorcycles with pedals helped to motorize the French public. The British autocycle fulfilled a similar function (without concessions), but the BMA was much more stylish, designed as miniature versions of the grand motorcycle models of the day.

BMA’s also attracted intrepid adventurers, who would motor them around the world as endurance tests for both machine and man. The chap below appears to have peugeot’d around Europe and subsequently drawn an artistic red line on a map to illustrate his route.

The ‘Type MT’ was the top-of-the-range Terrot BMA because of its two-speed gearbox.

On closer inspection, you can see the gear selector on the handlebars, next to the throttle lever.

This brochure with thanks to the excellent Terrot Club – http://www.terrot.org/

It’s now arrived in Brighton, and I’ve a few minor jobs to do. It needs a new front tyre, horn bulb, the engine needs a service, and it needs a really good clean. The original paint and chrome is tarnished here and there, but generally it is remarkable for its age.

The toolbox even contains its toolkit.

TERROT & Co
2 rue André-Colomban, Dijon

1939

Terrot was once France’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. I’ve added some early Terrot posters to the page for the 1920s Velo Terrot Dame at the Online Bicycle Museum website http://OldBike.euPLEASE CLICK HERE.

If you look closely above and below, you can see that rather than the pedals being set up for pedal-start, their position has been changed to resemble footrests. This was not uncommon at the time. Riders would push start their machines. I’ll return the pedals to pedal-start position when it’s serviced next week.

Some 1930s Peugeot BMA’s actually had a kickstart but also footrests that resembled pedals so owners could cheat the authorities and use the machine as a BMA without license or registration.

I’ll add a video and a few more photos once it’s visited our workshop.

VEHICLE CONDITION: Vintage vehicles are wonderful beasts

– but each has an individual personality and they sometimes have bad days just like you and me.
You will need basic mechanical skills (or a local mechanic) to use one on a regular basis.

Two-strokes invariably need basic servicing before starting them, if they’ve been left to stand for more than 3 weeks or so.

These are rare vehicles whose values are not necessarily based on running order.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT BID.
