1949 VAP3 in Original Running Order with Rare Accessories

48cc ABG Type M1

VAP3_1

I found this interesting VAP3 in Paris; it had been in storage for over 30 years.

VAP3_5

Above and below you can see the first rare accessory, which was made specifically for the VAP3. It’s a rear pannier, designed to fit on the opposite side of the rear rack to the petrol tank, whose design compliments the petrol tank.

Below you can see the front mudguard ‘weather shield’ fitting.

I think it very likely that Heath Robinson took at least one holiday in France. Because among this cyclemotor’s wonderful period accessories is one particular mechanism that defies description.

The pictures above and below reveal a switch fitted to the centre of the handlebars.

The switch mechanism is somewhat convoluted, to say the least. To operate it, you have to flick both the above switch and also the control you see on the cross-tube, below.

VAP3_2

The photo below is the cross-tube control seen from above.

But the operation is worthwhile.

Because this 1949 VAP3 is fitted with something quite advanced for its year of manufacture – rear ‘trafficator’ illuminating indicators!

A speedometer, above, and dynamo and lighting set, below, are always very welcome on a vintage machine. Though by comparison with that amazing indicator set-up, they appear somewhat mundane.

VAP3_4

My friend Patrick has completely reconditioned this 60-year-old moteur auxiliaire. He fitted some period red tyres and a new-old-stock coil. It starts easily and runs well.

ABG VAP HISTORY

vap1480.jpg

The company ABG (réunion des sociétés ARIES, La Bougie BG et de la SFEDR) was the largest postwar French manufacturer of auxiliary engines.

Hundreds of VAP Service Stations were set up throughout France in the fifties and sixties.

They could not compete with Motobecane and VéloSolex but, by the 1960s, with acquisitions of other companies, ABG had become the third largest manufacturer of mopeds in France.

THE VAP3

vap3cover480.jpg

The VAP3 was one of the first ‘moteur auxiliare’ models in full production in postwar France. The VAP was very popular as it was more powerful than its competitors such as Velosolex. Note that, unlike the VAP4, the VAP3 is not chain driven, and it has a magneto not a flywheel.

Although there is no clutch on this model, there is a lever to pull the engine up, and this works as well as a clutch.

2-Stroke engines – and cyclemotors in particular – are notoriously unreliable. Basic servicing is generally required if unused for even a few weeks.

These are rare vehicles whose values are not necessarily based on running order.
Unless an auction description specifically states that the vehicle is running, THE VEHICLE IS SOLD FOR RESTORATION.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT BID.
