Is there a polite way of describing hobbyists? My partner sometimes drops the term ‘obsessive’ into a conversation. Hobbyists themselves tend to prefer the word ‘enthusiast’ – though I think that term is too mild to sum up the amount of time many of my friends and I spend riding, researching, looking at, and enthusing over vintage cyclemotors and mopeds.

One of my more avant garde pals talks about his moped fetish. I don’t think his mopeds wear leather and fur; it’s just that his wife doesn’t understand why he spends so much time looking at pictures of old mopeds. If this page is indeed what she might consider ‘moped porn’ then may I – on behalf of Cazenave – welcome fellow aficionados to indulge in a moped rare in this country, and becoming increasingly rare even in its home country of France.

And, if you’re easily offended, please don’t look at the photos further down the page, where I removed the engine covers …to reveal a naked engine.

As you can read in its 1961 road test below, the Cazenave’s gimmick in Great Britain at the time was its price – under £40. For that price, you obviously got a rather basic mode of transport. But despite its utilitarian appearance, it is still a charming little machine.

I have quite a few 1950s French cyclemotors with trademark Gallic over-engineering: you know the kind of thing – 5 levers and controls where one would suffice; fun for a while, but the novelty can wear off with use. The Cazenave, however, is functionally minimalistic.

Although made in 1961, this cyclemotor reminds me of the first of the genre, from the early fifties. It’s really just a glorified motorized bicycle. That may not have helped its sales at the time but, retrospectively, definitely adds to its charm.

cazenave5

It appears to have been first registered at York County Borough Council in Leeds, on 28th September, 1961.

cazenave8

It was restored by its previous owner, is MOT’d, and runs well. Top speed is around 25mph.

CAZENAVE HISTORY

Louis Cazenave started making bicycles around 1900, in Belin, Gironde. Small motocycles were added to the product range, probably in the late 1920s (although the one in the picture below looks earlier).

04cazenave.jpg

Cazenave cyclemotors were introduced to the public at a trade show in 1950: among the 25 Cazenave bicycles on display stood a Cazenave cycle sporting a VAP4 engine and engine covers.

You can see three Cazenaves in the centre of photo below. This shop is the Mercedes concessionaire in Bayonne. There’s a Cazenave 200cc motorcycle on the right of the picture.

By 1954, Cazenave had seven models on offer, two having monotube girder frame and roller-drive engine below the pedals.

In 1964, Cazenave took over Paloma and VAP (which had recently lost the support of ABG), and all production moved to Belin.

VEHICLE CONDITION: Vintage vehicles are wonderful beasts

– but each has an individual personality and they sometimes have bad days just like you and me.
You will need basic mechanical skills (or a local mechanic) to use one on a regular basis.

Two-strokes invariably need basic servicing before starting them, if they’ve been left to stand for more than 3 weeks or so.

These are rare vehicles whose values are not necessarily based on running order.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT BID.
