1956 Peugeot 176TC4 175cc French Military Motorcycle

DVLA Registered (V5C)

New MOT. Runs Well

I bought this lovely French army motorcycle from the son of the previous owner. It was registered in the UK some years ago.

It has now been through our workshops, and I’ve just had it MOT’d. Below, you can see a video of it running.

SHORT VIDEO of PEUGEOT 175 RUNNING

***************

The Peugeot is in very good all-round condition. It has been fully serviced and is mechanically excellent. There are three minor cosmetic issues to attend to, though none are urgent:

1. It is missing its headlight lens. There’s a plastic one in place, which is not really suitable. The size is less than 7 inches (it’s around 6 3/4 inches). There are two easy options: It’s possible to grind down the lens from a used sealed-beam unit. Alternatively, a glazier can cut glass to fit. Or you can find a replacement one in France, where this size is common. I’ve left this job for the purchaser to do.

Likewise, the other two jobs: the saddle is wrong; again, they are common in France. And, finally, it’s missing its original chaincase. I’ve made one up, which is adequate (see picture below).

We do any important jobs on a bike, but I prefer to leave simple jobs to the purchaser, so I can sell the bike at a cheaper price.

Here you can see the Peugeot motorcycle in front of my restored 1955 Peugeot scooter.

SUMMARY: So, there you have it. A very attractive 54-year-old military machine, ready to use for local commutes, summer shows and rallies, or military events. With its 175cc engine, it’s a bit more powerful than the usual 125cc two-strokes. 125cc models are much more common in France; this example is much rarer.

A very comprehensive 240-page book is included in the sale. It includes a parts list, workshop manual, and history of the model. It cost 45 euros and comes from the French Peugeot Club.

The French Army in 1956

The last French soldier left Vietnam in April 1956.

The French army saw action in October 1956, along with their allies the British and Israelis, in Suez.

The French-Algerian War took place between 1954 and 1962. By 1956 France had committed more than 400,000 troops to Algeria. Although the elite airborne units and the Foreign Legion received particular notoriety, approximately 170,000 of the regular French army troops in Algeria were Muslim Algerians, most of them volunteers.

VEHICLE CONDITION: Vintage vehicles are wonderful beasts

– but each has an individual personality and they sometimes have bad days just like you and me.
You will need basic mechanical skills (or a local mechanic) to use one on a regular basis.

Two-strokes invariably need basic servicing before starting them, if they’ve been left to stand for more than 3 weeks or so.

These are rare vehicles whose values are not necessarily based on running order.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT BID.
