1961 BSA B40 350cc

Original Unrestored Barn Find

Mechanically Excellent. Cosmetically an ‘Oily Rag’

Starts Easily. Runs Well

DVLA Registered. New MOT

The BSA B40 is an underrated machine.

The B40 engine is very robust and, as you can see from the 100mph speedo illustrated below – with 74,000 miles on the clock – this is a powerful 350cc motorcycle. It’s engine, with the same spec as the road-going model, was successful in competition work.

This particular example was supplied by Temple Motorcycles of Oxford in 1961. The dealer sticker can still be seen clearly on the front mudguard.

This machine is a classic barn find. It rested for the past thirty years in a stable in Oxfordshire until I purchased it last month.

It’s exactly as we like our bikes, ie nobody has messed with it. You can ride it as it is, as a classic ‘oily rag’ or restore it.

My mechanic has gone through it thoroughly, and everything works 100%. It has a new MOT.

The engine is sweet, the clutch and gears operate smoothly, and it starts easily and runs well.

SHORT VIDEO of BSA B40 RUNNING

*****************

The only damage to the bike is a dent in the petrol tank, on the nearside underneath the BSA badge (sell below).

Of course, a major advantage of running a B40 is that spares are easy enough to come by.

The seat is in good condition.

There’s no centre stand; the side stand works fine.

You can jump on this bike and ride it right away.

****************

Though the military employment of the B40 is well-documented, it’s not generally known that the AA also introduced them for a few years in the early sixties. When BSA introduced it, the B40 was seen as a possible replacement for the AA’s elderly M21’s. However, due to its light weight it did not work adequately with a sidecar for wintry conditions, so could only be used for solo work in summer.

VEHICLE CONDITION: Vintage vehicles are wonderful beasts

– but each has an individual personality and they sometimes have bad days just like you and me.
You will need basic mechanical skills (or a local mechanic) to use one on a regular basis.

Two-strokes invariably need basic servicing before starting them, if they’ve been left to stand for more than 3 weeks or so.

These are rare vehicles whose values are not necessarily based on running order.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT BID.
