1939 Triumph Ladyback Tandem Model TDMLTV TriVelox
Frame: 21″ front; 20 1/2 rear
Wheels: 26 x 1 3/8
TriVelox Gears
Hub brakes
Plastic mudguards
This is one of the rarest tandems of the 1930s. Manufacturers mostly made tandems to special order, as they were expensive machines. This model sold for £15 18/- whereas a Triumph Lady’s bicycle with TriVelox gears was nearly a third of the price, at £5 10/-
But this was the heyday for tandems and there was a lot of competition. Though Triumph was one of the top motorcycle manufacturers of the time, they were not one of the major players in the cycle market. Because they did not produce many bicycles, there are very few pre-war Triumph tandems still in existence. This survivor is in good original condition, with its original transfers intact on the headstock and on the seat tube. The TriVelox gear linkeage needs attention and has been removed and stored in its saddlebag.
I now have so many bikes in the restoration queue that I’ve had to prioritise, so I’m putting 50 items for sale on ebay this month. Although many have no reserve (and starting prices of 99p), this particular machine is too rare to ‘give away’ – I doubt I’d find another. So, if it’s not snapped up this month by a fellow collector who appreciates its rarity and investment value, I’ll gladly withdraw it from sale and keep it to restore later.
