The ST70 Mighty Dax was only made for the American market. Some British enthusiasts de-restricted the ST70 engine and uprated the engine. The job on this one has been done well. It’s noticeably faster than usual, and ideal for nipping through London traffic, which is why my friend Ian bought it in the first place.

He actually bought it from me, two or three years ago, to keep on his boat. But as he is now off to New Zealand, I’m helping him sell his motorcycles. You’ll see his Honda 750 chop is on this website too; in fact the ST70 looks rather odd next to the large chopper, as you can see in one of the photos further down the page.

It starts easily, runs well, and he’ll MOT it next week ready for its new owner.

BRIEF HISTORY of the HONDA ST70

hondaST70_ad_6

Honda launched the first ‘ST70Z General Export’ in 1969. The detachable front fork was known as the Dax, a name related to the Daschund because of the stretched shape of the ST70’s frame.

The ST70Z model was equiped with a 70cc semi-automatic single overhead camshaft horizontal four stroke engine, as fitted to the Honda C70 cub. It came in three colors: candy ruby red, candy sapphire blue and candy Gold. You could also get a sportier model in candy special yellow.

The Dax, introduced in 1970, was made for the European market. It was officially known as the K1 and, as well as the ST70 version there was a smaller capacity ST50. In 1972, the K1 was replaced by the K2, which was essentially the same except for upswept exhaust, and a governed flywheel, smaller carburetor, smaller intake and milder cam to restrict the speed to 28mph.

Honda also marketed an ST90 Mighty Dax in the USA, though production of this model ceased after three years. The ST70 was redesigned in 1978, from which time it was known as the K3.

Producing 5.2bhp @ 9000rpm, this machine, weighing in at just 66kg, had acceleration that could catch out the unwary rider, especially when pushing the gear lever down while holding open the revs – easy to do with an automatic clutch. Assuming the rider was not ejected backwards, they might get it up to its top speed of 47mph. The ST70 has now achieved cult status, and the bike can command high resale values.

VEHICLE CONDITION: Vintage vehicles are wonderful beasts

– but each has an individual personality and they sometimes have bad days just like you and me.
You will need basic mechanical skills (or a local mechanic) to use one on a regular basis.

Two-strokes invariably need basic servicing before starting them, if they’ve been left to stand for more than 3 weeks or so.

These are rare vehicles whose values are not necessarily based on running order.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT BID.
