Page 91. 1967 Velosolex 3800 Triporteur (3-Wheeler). SOLD

1967 Velosolex 3800 Triporteur

Engine number 4248655

My latest acquisition is a rare Velosolex 3800 Triporteur.

Here’s my pal Alain having a laugh with it.

The Solex is, of course, a French institution. Modern motorists may possibly think, when stuck behind one on a French road, that the Velosolexiste should be committed to an institution.

As there is no comparable British cyclemotor to catch our own public imagination, vintage enthusiasts across the Channel have also recently become somewhat besotted with these charming little machines.

I particularly like the rear end of this machine. It has been beautifully designed and crafted.

THE VELOSOLEX

The history of the Velosolex is already well documented. By the 1960s, the Solex had become firmly established as one of France’s most important cultural icons. Above, Catherine Deneuve poses in St. Tropez for Life magazine. Below you can see that even across the Channel, the British were already sampling the charms of the Solex. Manfred Mann appear to have started a local chapter of the Solex Club for their 1965 hit If you Gotta Go Now.

By the 1970s, French enthusiasts started to experiment with their Velosolexes, and hybrids started to appear. The Solex tandem and the Solex Triporteur, in some ways, started out as a joke; because the engine is not really powerful enough to propel the machine with sufficient velocity to carry more than one passenger at great speed. Nevertheless, a 3800 engine actually does an admirable job despite its low capacity and, as long as you don’t expect to get anywhere fast, you can indeed carry a guest on such a Velosolex.

ENGINE NUMBER 4248655

This Solex Triportuer is currently licensed in France. You can see the official certificate above, with confirmation of the engine number 4248655, and the actual engine number on the engine, below. You’ll need this information to register it in the UK.

Although the vast majority of Solex triporteurs are home-built jobs, the machine was converted into a three-wheeler model by the a company called Sides. They are believed to have built around 50 of them.

And, below, you can see the Bercy kit for home-built Solex triporteurs.

VEHICLE CONDITION: Vintage vehicles are wonderful beasts

– but each has an individual personality and they sometimes have bad days just like you and me.
You will need basic mechanical skills (or a local mechanic) to use one on a regular basis.

Two-strokes invariably need basic servicing before starting them, if they’ve been left to stand for more than 3 weeks or so.

These are rare vehicles whose values are not necessarily based on running order.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE, PLEASE DO NOT BID.
